WebCommons Software Project: Citizen Assembly Board

WebCommons Citizen Assembly Board™ (in alpha development) is a web application based on the open-source application phpBB 2 that provides for an online discussion board.   CAB features beyond what phpBB provides include:

  • High usability, straightforward navigation and speedy response times.
  • Integrated Events Calendar and Daily Events Schedule, where discussion topics can be easily tied to dates on a calendar.
  • Advanced Slashdot-like (but better) post rating system that is highly configurable; ratings “bubble up” to post, topic and user ranks.
  • Forum watches, similar to topic watches, along with a straightforward interface for the maintenance of both.  When a forum is watched, e-mail notifications are sent to users whenever selected forums get new topics or replies to topics.
  • Featured topics chosen by the administrator that display at the top of the index page (the “Board Portal”).
  • Advanced polling features, including multiple choice voting, undoing votes, and closing polls early.  Active polls are listed on a board page.
  • Expanded search capability, including searching on titles only as well as searching specifically within topics (especially helpful for topics spread out amongst multiple pages).
  • Similar topics shown at the bottom of every topic page.
  • Spell checking of posts while drafting or editing.
  • “Quick Reply” to topics.
  • Easier user registration and account recovery.
  • Enhanced board configurability and administrative tools. Includes comprehensive ban management, search table rebuilding, and automatic mass locking of topics.
  • Expanded BBCodes, including ones for easily creating Wikipedia links and embedding YouTube videos. User-friendly URL and wiki-link builders are also included.
  • Enhanced profile settings (including signature preview) and user administration.
  • Advanced tooltips for links and images, including tooltip-based previews of topics, last posts and Wikipedia articles.
  • Most recent topics displayed on a board page, along with an associated RSS feed of the thirty most recent.
  • Printer-friendly topics, including the ability to print out a full topic spread out amongst two or more pages. Even single posts can be printed out easily.
  • Easy ability for users to share topics with friends, family or colleagues via e-mail, AIM, SMS (texting), or social networking/bookmarking sites (e.g., Facebook and Twitter) — uses ShareThis technology.
  • Search engine optimization (SEO) comprehensively designed into every part of the board. Includes automatic sitemap generation and search engine pinging.
  • Anti-spam mechanisms for blocking automated registrations as well as spam posts by new users.
  • Event logging and site usage tracking.
  • SQL caching for dramatically enhanced server performance. This feature is especially beneficial for boards deployed on shared hosting.
  • Smart login redirection so users never have to lose their place.
